Optometry
What is an optometrist?
An optometrist is an independent primary health care provider who specializes in the examination, diagnosis, treatment, management, and prevention of diseases and disorders of the visual system, the eye and associated structures as well as the diagnosis of related systemic conditions.
Optometrists understand the importance of vision and eye health at all stages of life, from birth to the golden years. They differ from opticians (who may dispense eyewear) and ophthalmologists (eye surgeons).
How do I become an optometrist?
In order to practice in Canada, you must complete an Optometry Doctorate (OD) from an accredited school of Optometry. For more information about Optometry as a career, visit the Canadian Association of Optometrists career information page. |
